The God Particle

I think the greatest modern boon one could have in this Internet age is to be featured on the home page of Google. No, not the 1st page of search listings after people type in their search query. But to be ON the home page of Google itself.

Today, September 11th 2008, as I get online, I see the graphic of the LHC encircling the Google logo, like an Ouroboros.

The LHC, or the Large Hadron Collider, is presently the world’s largest particle accelerator that was built to collide opposing high energy beams of hadrons. One of its aims is to verify the existence of the God particle or the Higgs Boson, a hypothetical entity attributed to giving mass to matter.

My commentary on this article: the author recalled how when the first atomic bomb was tested, people were worried it might ignite the whole atmosphere, but it didn’t. He compared it with the paranoia today surrounding the LHC. But then he forgot that though the first A-Bomb did not ignite the atmosphere, it spawned a new age of uncertainty and nuclear proliferation.
